St Patrick's Day Playlist

St. Patrick’s Day Special!

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! Tomorrow is St Patrick’s Day, the great festival for the patron saint of Ireland that is celebrated the world over by consuming copious amounts of Guinness and putting on naff Irish accents. As it’s Saturday today, I assume you, like me, will be doing the majority of your partying today/tonight rather than on a Sunday. But what will you be dancing the jig to??

Now, I know that a lot of the playlists I’ve come across are very heavy on American celtic punks such as Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy’s, or are overloaded with traditional songs by the likes of Dubliners, which, although appropriate, are not really the sort of thing everyone wants to listen to. I’m half-Irish – kiss me, I’m half-Irish! -and even I don’t really want to be listening too much of that traditional folky shit. You’ll probably hear a lot of U2, and later on, once the craic has really kicked off, you might be partial to a bit of B*Witched (it’s fine, everybody loves that song) or Boyzone. But, for the not-yet-drunk-and-wanting-to-hear-some-genuinely-good-music stage, I’ve prepared this little playlist of 10 songs for you. Enjoy!

Great Big Sea – Mary Mac

Ok, so Great Big Sea are actually Canadian, but have you ever heard anything so uproariously Oirish? Me neither!

Sultans of Ping FC – Where’s Me Jumper?

The theme song to Moone Boy, 'Where's Me Jumper?' does tread that fine line between awesome and annoying but if you like it, you reallly like it. I do. My girlfriend doesn't.

The Waterboys – Sweet Thing

Van Morrison's original is majestic in it's own right, but The Waterboys' lush cover is just wonderful. Replete with singing fiddles and a 'Blackbird' coda thrown in for good measure, it may just be Mike Scott's finest seven plus minutes.

The Pogues – Pair of Brown Eyes

No Paddy's day playlist would be complete without the Pogues and this - one of the best tracks from their best album - is a sterling testament to why. A shambling bittersweet ballad that can't be bothered.

Hothouse Flowers – Don’t Go

Arguably the poppiest tune in this list, it's still a fantastic anthem that undoubtedly deserves it's place on this list.

Thin Lizzy – Rosalie

"Is there anybody here with any Irish in them?" Phil Lynott asked his audience on one of the tracks from this live album. "Would any of the girls like a little more in them??". The dog.

Whipping Boy - We Don't Need Nobody Else

Quite why Whipping Boy didn't make it big in the post-grunge is a mystery to me, but this tune showcases the latent potential that the lads had.

The Divine Comedy – Songs of Love

The Divine Comedy were one of the greatest bands of the nineties (when frontman Neil Hannon wasn't hamming it up too much), and this is one of their more magnificent efforts. And, and, It's the theme tune to Father Ted!

Fionn Regan – Catacombs

What about the young Irish artists?, I most definitely don't hear you asking. Honestly? I don't really know loads... but Fionn Regan is good!

The Commitments – Mustang Sally

Nuff said.
